Health Often accompanies the chronic suppression of emotion. We drink or take tranquillizers, anti-depressants or so-called recreational drugs to suppress difficult emotions, to enable us to get on with our lives without confronting the issues which are emerging. Sooner or later comes the decision to try to stop. This is easier said than done. Unless you are very strong-willed, do not attempt to withdraw mom drugs, prescribed or otherwise, without the help of an experienced practitioner or counsellor. Sometimes people can be so frightened by the withdrawal effects that they stop withdrawal and never try again. So enter into the process slowly, patiently and with support. Always slow down the rate of withdrawal if you feel panicky. Some people, on the other hand, have no ill-effect beyond mild anxiety or bad temper for a few days. If insomnia has been part of the problem, use a herbal remedy for sleeplessness to help you over the first difficult weeks and take plenty of calcium and calcium-rich drinks at bed time. Herbal compounds containing passiflora or valerian are helpful and can be obtained from health food stores. It will be very helpful to try to adopt a whole food diet high in complex carbohydrates during any process of withdrawal. The body looks greedily for the nutrients of which it has been depleted, and settles down more quickly if these needs are supplied. Giving in to the temptation to hit the sweets and chocolates for a quid sugar fix draws us into yet another addictive spiral and leads to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), with feelings of shakiness and weakness and being unable to cope, and hence back to the drug and alcohol. For help with a suitable diet, a useful book is Martin Budd’s Low Blood Sugar. The following remedies may help both with the effects of the drugs and with the actual withdrawal symptoms. LACHESIS This may be useful especially for the effects of alcohol abuse, for the ‘social drinker’ who gets drunk at parties or in company, is scintillatingly witty and entertaining or feels angry and persecuted and can’t remember a word that was said the next morning. NUX VOMICA This is always the first remedy to consider in any question of drug or alcohol dependency. The general picture of the remedy corresponds very well to that of the addiction-prone personality: it contains the whole spiral of addiction including the liver damage. It is also most useful in helping moderate the anxiety, panic, irritability and muscle spasm often’ associated with withdrawal. SULPHUR This is a great cleansing remedy. It may be useful where there has been solitary drinking and nervous exhaustion has set in. Use Nux vomica during the process of withdrawal, Sulphur after withdrawal is completed. The following remedies may help with some of the specific withdrawal symptoms: Aconite: Sudden panic, fear of dying, feeling chilly. Arnica: Bruised sore sensations. Arsenicum: Great anxiety, restlessness, fear of being alone. Rhus tox: Muscle stiffness and soreness. About the Author: 相关的主题文章:
